What to check after heavy rain reaches a private well

Learn when heavy rain can threaten a Hill Country private well, what to inspect and when testing should happen before drinking the water.

The short answer

Heavy rain alone does not prove that a private well is contaminated. Concern rises when floodwater surrounds or covers the wellhead, the cap or casing is damaged, pressure is lost or the water suddenly changes. In those situations, avoid using the water for drinking or cooking until the well is inspected and appropriate testing confirms the next step.

Know when to stop using the water

A sudden change in sediment, cloudiness, odor or color is also a reason to pause and investigate. Those symptoms do not identify a specific contaminant, but they show that conditions changed.

Inspection, disinfection and testing are different steps

Shock chlorination must be performed with the correct concentration, contact time and safety precautions. It is not a substitute for repairing a damaged cap or casing, and a sample collected too early can give a misleading picture of the water.

Check the treatment equipment too

If questionable water moved through a softener, filter, storage tank, reverse osmosis system or other treatment equipment, the treatment train may need separate cleaning, sanitizing, cartridge replacement or media evaluation. Follow manufacturer requirements and qualified professional guidance.

A treatment device does not make an unsafe source automatically safe. Private well water treatment begins with source protection and appropriate testing, then equipment is selected for the conditions that remain.

Build a storm record for the well

Photograph the wellhead and surrounding grade after the event, save laboratory results and record any repairs, disinfection and filter changes. If the same problem returns after storms, the record helps a well professional identify a drainage, construction or sealing problem instead of repeating temporary treatment.
